Star Wars BB-8 Card

I made this card months ago for a friend's son who likes Star Wars. I found some free printable BB-8 paper on Google, which meant I could print it out in different scales as both the background and the feature! I wish I could give you a link to it, but I can't seem to find my bookmark... If you recognise it, feel free to comment and I'll update this post with the source :) I added some Glossy Accents to his central "eye" - it's basically a liquid which sets completely clear in a slightly domed form - it's great for things like this!

Crochet Jedi Bunny

When I saw this Amigurumi Bunny in Hoodie pattern over on How to Amigurumi, I knew I had to make one - they're just so cute! I also needed a last minute extra Christmas present for my husband, and realised the pattern could be easily adapted to make a Jedi Bunny.

I mainly crocheted the rabbit as per the pattern, with a small alteration around the join between the tummy and the hoody in order to attach the "skirt" of the robe. I also added a small braided belt and stitched a metal bead on to act as a lightsaber. Have you ever wondered what was under a Jedi's robes? Well I have the answer - cute, fluffy little rabbit tails :D

This pattern worked up really quickly and produced a cute teddy, about the size of my hand. I love that the hood can be taken down, and that the ears pop up through it when it is raised! I hand stitched the details on the face - I find this gives more control over the finished expression than using safety eyes, but that's just my preference. I recommend giving this pattern a try if you love bunnies as much as we do!

May the force (and plenty of carrots) be with you this Christmas!

Star Wars Cards

I was wandering around B&Q (a DIY store here in the UK) at some point last year, and I found a roll of Star Wars wallpaper. If you've read my blog for a while you will know that my husband is fairly obsessed with Star Wars, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to buy it! We don't have a wall in our house to use it on at the moment, but it features a panel design, making it great to cut up and use in so many ways!

One way I've been using it is in card making. The big panels make nice A5 cards with a splash of colour behind them, whilst the mini-scenes within each panel make smaller cards in their own right. I've also been mounting the larger panels on mountboard for my husband to display around the house. Given that I have a whole roll of this wallpaper, I'm sure I will be using it in many future projects!

Star Wars: Battle Droid

So this would be the latest (and craziest) addition to my collection of Star Wars crochet amigurumi characters, a Battle Droid. Why crazy? Just look at that structure! Pipecleaners to the rescue. And maybe my glue gun in places, but we won't talk about that. And no, no pattern I'm afraid. But if you have a go, prepare your patience...!

I wrapped wool around pipecleaners for the super skinny bits, as I felt it gave a nicer finish than crocheting over them. He is complete with back pack and blaster too! He couldn't exactly stand up on his own (I think if I was to start with a sturdy metal frame which I crocheted around it would be possible, but not this time!) so I made him a little stand from a disc of cardboard and a wooden dowel. He can be removed from the stand, but it helps for display purposes!

Star Wars: Jabba the Hutt

After making Salacious Crumb, I felt that it would be a bit out of place to have him on his own without Jabba the Hutt! I was hoping to use Lucy Ravenscar's pattern, but it is only available in her new book, and having purchased her other patterns via Etsy I have no wish to purchase an entire book for one pattern!!

So I referenced some photos of amigurumi crochet Jabbas on Google, and some pictures of Jabba himself, and made this pattern up as I went along. I created shaping using various hdc and dc, increasing and decreasing to create the mass of skin, before finished with a few strands of wool pulled through the figure to hold the folds in place. I think it is really effective, and I was pleased to manage to create Jabba's shape in a single piece, only joining the arms.

Here's Jabba the Hutt with Salacious Crumb:

And Slave Leia too, to give a sense of scale between the pieces in my collection.

Star Wars: Salacious Crumb

With the launch of Lucy Ravenscar's first book, she released this free pattern for Salacious B. Crumb, the jester to Jabba the Hutt. I am not sure my version is overly accurate to the original character, but when sat next to Jabba I trust he is identifiable!!

Star Wars: Max Rebo

As I'm sure you are aware, Max Rebo is the keyboardist in the Max Rebo Band, who played at Jabba the Hutt's palace in Star Wars. (Obviously.) He felt like a good place to start as I expand my world of Star Wars crochet figures!

I adapted Max Rebo's body from Lucy Ravenscar's Yoda pattern (which I used here), but I created the head and ears myself. I also designed the keyboard from scratch, and enjoyed adding the additions of some beads I had in my stash. This figure required some unusual shapes, but my skills at shaping crochet are improving, and let's be honest, crochet can be an artistic interpretation!

Star Wars: BB-8

Do you recognise this latest edition to the Star Wars franchise? He is very cute! I designed the pattern myself, a simple sphere and half sphere, with some embroidered detail. I had this matte button in my collection, and I really like how it looks!

Star Wars Revan Birthday Cake

When I asked my husband what he would like his Birthday cake to be, he immediately said "Revan!" I was hardly surprised since our world seems to be revolving around Revan at the moment, with my husband having just started writing his first Star Wars novel, Revan's Rebirth!

I winged this cake more than I want to admit, but I am thrilled with how it came out! I used this marble cake recipe, but the vanilla batter is coloured bright red! I used Renshaw's grey and poppy red icings to cover the cake, and then added shading using gel food colouring - liquorice black and dark brown - and a paint brush, and finished it off with a layer of antique silver shimmer dust! I think it really captures the worn metallic look.

Star Wars: Luke Skywalker, X-wing Pilot

I'm afraid this is the third and final installment of this mini Star Wars week. But, it is Luke Skywalker. In his X-Wing outfit.

A fiddly little one this one, especially with the helmet, I love the finished thing though.

Star Wars: Slave Leia

Part two of this mini Star Wars themed week! This is another new addition to Lucy Ravenscar's Star Wars crochet collection, Slave Leia. (I almost feel like I should be warning of partial amigurumi nudity here haha!)

Admittedly my Leia has a slightly funky face... The bikini was a bit fiddly, but I enjoyed the way the hair was made, and the finishing touch of the band on the plait.

Star Wars: Admiral Ackbar

Remember my little collection of Star Wars crochet characters from 2012? Well, I'm here this week with some new additions! These are again made from patterns from Lucy Ravenscar.

First up, Admiral Ackbar!

I really enjoyed crocheting master Ackbar. He has the perfect balance of details, without being too fiddly, and making that head shape was fun!

The eyes were the only bit I did find fiddly, but that is because instead of using black and yellow safety eyes, I used plain black safety eyes and stitched some yellow around it... I think it worked out ok though!

He has a cute flap on the back of his jacket, and I liked the way the figure was constructed from sometimes working in FLO or BLO.

Crochet Yoda Toy

I recently saw this amazing Star Wars themed nursery by Sticks on a Plane, and particularly fell in love with this simple Yoda toy. I couldn't find a pattern anywhere, but thought it would be perfect for my youngest nephew for Christmas, and managed to crochet one up in an afternoon!

The ring was a simple rectangle that I joined up and stuffed. The ears were a lot more difficult and don't perfectly match each other haha, but I think it looks just lovely :)

Star Wars: Defend and Protect Painting

With my health this last year, large paintings have simply not been possible for me. However, with recent small improvements and a huge kick of motivation, I decided I wanted my husband to have this piece of artwork for Christmas! I began in October, and had it finished at the beginning of December, which felt amazing! I'm afraid most of the progress pictures were taken on my phone, but I thought you'd like to see the stages nonetheless.
I did not design this, I based it on this wonderful poster by Mike Kungl. I knew how much my husband would love seeing a hand painted version of this poster on his wall every day, and couldn't resist making that dream a reality. I take no credit for the design!

Darth Rabbit

If you've been following me for a while, you will probably be aware of our two gorgeous bunnies, Toffee and Flopsy, and that we treat them slightly like children! As such, Fathers Day and Mothers Day are suitably celebrated in our household.

I didn't have much time to work on a Fathers Day card from the bunnies this year, but as my husband is an avid Star Wars fan, I pondered the concept of a Rabbit Darth Vader... A quick Google search helped my design along the way, and I did a freehand sketch based on the image, using white pencil and black card. I cut out the areas I wanted using my scalpel, and mounted it :)

May The Fourth Be With You!

If you've never taken the time to look through my Star Wars tag, may I introduce you to it? Here are some of the geeky projects I've created over the last couple of years...

Over the next few months I'm hoping to have a section of this blog dedicated to geeky art, I just need to get round to it...!
