Tried and Tested Tip Number 1! [Crochet]

Hello!

As you might have heard on Facebook, or noticed by the new image in the sidebar here, I'm introducing a new, fortnightly feature to this blog - Tried and Tested Tips!

Each fortnight (hopefully!) I'll be sharing with you a creative tip I've picked up along the way - it might help you organise your stash, progress in crochet, or just fire up that creative spark.

First up, how do you mark stitches, or the beginnings of rounds, in crochet? I know a lot of people talk about a short length of thread, or a safety pin. Me? I use a kirby grip (aka a bobby pin).

Sorry I can't tell you what project this is just yet, it's a surprise I'm working on! Possibly the most complex crochet I've done, interchanging 4 colours!

I discovered it quite by accident! I never used to mark rounds, and would simply count stitches constantly. Then I worked on a bigger project, and I kept getting interrupted - not good! I looked around for something I could use, something I could just slip on and off a stitch - no hassle. And there it was, just lying on the table in front of me... (And now kept with all my pins and needles!)

Really, if you're looking for a quick and easy way to mark stitches, this has GOT to be it. (And even better for me, I often have a spare one in my hair for those crochet emergencies!)

Have you got a Tip (or even a simple tutorial) you'd like me to feature? Drop me an email (link in my profile), and if I try it, test it, and decide to feature it, you will receive a 20% discount off your next order (excl. P&P) from my shop! Go on, what have you got to lose?

Shop: LP Record Trays

I know this sounds crazy, but a part of me hurts when I make these. I mean, how dare I melt vintage vinyl?! But in these days where very few people have record players, but everyone still has a soft spot for these beautiful records, these make the perfect compromise.

LP Record Tray
£8 (+ P&P £2.99)
Vintage LP Record hand shaped to form a tray suitable for use around the home. (I recommended a simple lining if using with food.)
The approximate diameter is 27cm/10.5", and the approximate depth is 2cm/1".
This record is Starlight Chorale.

These trays are great for presenting cakes, biscuits, gingerbread houses, and sweets and treats to everyone (just remember to use a doilie to line it). They are also great for dumping your keys and wallet in as you walk in the door; for piling your bracelets and knick-knacks on; or just to admire some vintage in your home.

This record is Simon and Garfunkle - Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Choose from one I have in stock, or request a custom tray based on an LP you love or used to love. Coordinate labels to match your living room or your snacks, and I can even adjust the size of the bowl to suit your needs.

Mixing It Up.

I don't think I've ever really talked about my baking here... But I love to bake! I love to lose myself in my kitchen, turn my music up loud and just create - and try not to care if it all goes wrong! (Although, my husband is very good at stepping in when the roofs on gingerbread houses collapse, or I max out our scales half way through adding sugar to flour...) I'm even hoping to get a stand mixer soon, which will make it easier!

As I mentioned on Facebook, it was my Birthday this weekend, and this was my Birthday cake :) The whole thing was made with this chocolate cake recipe, filled and covered in "normal" buttercream, and topped with fondant (marbled with Christmas Red and Navy gels), white chocolate buttons, and buttercream roses :)

I assembled it the night before, having never made a tiered cake before, and it stayed standing - woop!!

You can see a few other bits of my baking here, and my rather popular Minecraft cake here.

I'll resume shop postings soon, but I have a few really stressful weeks ahead of me, so sorry if I'm a bit quiet. Cheer me up though, and have a look at my shop :)

Crocheted Robot Finger Puppets

My eldest nephew turned 5 this week, so I crocheted him 3 little robot finger puppets!

I got the pattern from Crocheted Finger Puppets by Gina Alton, although adapted it slightly as always!

They went down well, and I can't wait to try more creations from this book!
